Platinum Grade Silicone Lid

The U Konserve lids used to be made from plastic, and while they were pretty easy to get on and off too, over time, plastic lids are prone to cracking, especially on the corners and even more so when they are washed in the dishwasher.

This does not make them a great option in the long run, and it's one of the reasons that several years ago, we removed them from our range. In 2023, they have kept the same design but swapped the plastic lids for platinum grade silicone. The benefits of this are:-

It's the 4th point that makes them the ideal lunch box for kids. Some of our full stainless steel lunch boxes can be tricky for small hands to open and close the clips and the latches. While this may not be the first thing that comes to mind when buying a lunch box for your kids, they can go in the freezer, and while you might not want to put your kids lunch in the freezer, this feature means you can use the lunch box for so many other things. So many meal prep containers sold online are divided like these, but they're single use plastic and get thrown away after one use. Why can I freeze this lunch box but not my stainless steel water bottle?

It's all in the lid and what's inside the container. With a lunch box / food container like this, the U Konserve lids, made from silicone, are covering a wide area of the container, and the contents are not all liquid and completely full. A stainless steel water bottle is a completely different matter, and we'll explain why.

When you're putting water in a stainless steel water bottle, you're filling it, or coming close to filling it, with something that's known to expand when it's frozen. You also only have a small opening and a lid. When you fill or come close to filling a stainless steel water bottle with water and you put the lid on it, the water expands. Whether the bottle is full of water or you've left a gap of air, the lid is air tight and the total volume of contents expand, and will often crack the bottle or at the least, create a bulge in the bottom so it will never sit flat again.

If you absolutely must freeze water in a stainless steel water bottle, ensure the following, and know that it will void your warranty if you have a mishap:-

1. Don't completely fill the bottle
2. Freeze it with the lid OFF
3. Only put the lid on when the water is completely frozen

Under these circumstances, it's usually fine with a better quality bottle.
