What does compostable mean?

When a product is compostable, it means it will eventually break down into raw nutrients that can be used to grow something else. Sometimes products are home compostable, other times, the environment of a commercial composting facility is needed.

How long do Biotuff bags take to break down in home compost?

Depending on the environment in your home compost you can expect this to take around 6 months. It all depends on how often you turn and aerate your compost and what kind of heat you can get in to it.

Will Biotuff bags break down in landfill?

Since a large majority of Biotuff compostable bags won’t end up in a compost pile, but in landfill, it is helpful to know what will happen to them in that setting. Traditional plastics will take hundreds of years to break down in landfill, and then they do, they leave microplastics in the soul that’s left behind. In landfill, compostable bags will break down eventually, leaving no toxic residue or microplastics behind, but it will take longer than the 6 months in the compostable environment.

Can Biotuff compostable bags be put in your recycling?

No. They are no plastic and they have no recycling code. If you have recycling and you have it in a plastic bag you will contaminate your recycling. It’s exactly the same thing with a compostable corn starch bag. They have no place in a recycling bin. Some councils will allow you to put them in your green bins, but you will need to check your local council website to find out if your area accepts them.
