This week we introduced a new bento box range from U Konserve to our store and these bentos address some of the most common issues that customers have with some of the existing bento boxes in store.

#1 removable dividers

The Lunchbots bento range are by far the most popular in store, but we do get customers asking if they can remove the bento dividers, and unfortunately you can't. We are yet to see a bento design with stainless steel removable dividers that we are happy with, but this is a really great alternative. There are pro's and cons to removable bento dividers. The obvious pro is that you can use it bento style one day and then as one large single box the following day. The obvious con is that the bento dividers get lost. If you have responsible kids or you're a responsible adult, then losing the dividers won't be an issue and this is your lunch box.

#2 taller than the average stainless steel lunch box

One of the things we have noticed about most stainless steel lunch box designs is their height. While most are great for sandwich height, when your'e starting to stack larger things in them, they don't always fit your whole lunch in. Currently, the larger sized Lunchbots measure in at around 4cm high with a maximum volume of 960ml, or just under 1 litre. For plenty of people, this is more than enough. For others, it isn't. The U Konserve bentos come in two sizes, both of which nest inside each other and have a more generous height.

  • Medium = 6.35cm tall
  • Large  = 7.62cm tall

The medium sized U Konserve shares the same volume as the large Lunchbots, just in a different shape, square and taller. The larger of the U Konserve bentos comes in at just under 1.5 litres, making it the largest stainless steel lunch box in our range by volume. (Update May 2019 - this statement is no longer true, the Avanti Dry Cell have larger boxes in stainless steel now)

#3 leakproof lid

While I would let one of these rattle around loose inside an insulated lunch bag (for fear of the lid bumping off), when the bpa free lid is in place and the lunch box is sensibly stored and transported, the lid is leakproof. This does mean you have plastic touching your food, and for some people this is a deal breaker. For many people, it isn't. We are yet to find an affordable and well designed stainless steel lunch box with a stainless steel leakproof lid. For that, you actually need to step up to an insulated food flask, and the shape doesn't work for sandwiches and the like. Visit our Thermos category and you will find quite a few. They are very popular, but again, many contain plastic under the lids.
