Out of all the hair types, conditioner and curly hair are the most important. Curly hair is often dry and frizzy and not only does the conditioner add moisture to your hair, but it helps to define curls. For really curly hair, a cowash, or ‘conditioner wash’ is often used instead of the shampoo/conditioner combination. What’s the best way to condition your hair naturally?

Even if you choose the right product for your hair type, the way you use it can still make a difference to how your hair looks after your cleansing and conditioning routine.

TIP 1 - put most of the conditioner on the middle and ends of your hair, not on the scalp. We condition our hair to put back some of what shampooing takes away, and that is the natural oils that come from your scalp. Your scalp will do a good job of keeping the hair closest to your head looking its best. Too much conditioner near or on the scalp will just weigh your hair down.

TIP 2 - leaving the conditioner on for as long as you can will give you the best results. Shampoo your hair first thing in the shower and then condition. We certainly don’t advocate long showers, but there’s nothing wrong with adding your conditioner and popping a shower cap on and then getting back in the shower in 10-15 minutes to rinse if your schedule allows. This is probably easier to do in the evening or on the weekends for most people.

TIP 3 - condition more than you shampoo. It might be that you shampoo once a week but you’ll condition your hair twice a week. People with curly hair do this all the time with a cowash. Experiment with frequency and see what works for you.
